Chapter Twenty-Two

LINK

By the time I get back to the suite, Sam’s in his room snoring away like a true blender of wildebeests. So I head back out to the balcony to clear my head. Maybe the cool night air will knock some sense back into me, because that was a close call.

I almost kissed Hadley for real. Not like at the movie theater or the clocktower with Sam there filming us. But alone. On her porch swing. And as I drove away—I’m not gonna lie—my heart was banging so hard, I almost drove right over the leaves I just raked and plowed straight into her trees.

But you can’t do that, Link. You can’t kiss her alone anywhere. Even if you’re getting signals from her that she’s interested, it’s not fair to her.

Hadley’s life is here in Harvest Hollow. She’s a music teacher with a job she loves, and a roommate best friend, and a two-bedroom house that’s cute enough to be in a snow globe. She and her dad have Meatloaf Night every week. EVEN WHEN SHE WAS IN COLLEGE.

Being with me for real would turn her life into a permanent circus. That’s not what any of us wants.

Besides.

She has to dump me at the end of this. Our breakup’s built into the deal. So I can’t let myself hope for anything more than temporary from her. Not without risking everything. What I need is to get my pulse calmed down so I can stop hyperventilating at the image of her lips moving so close to mine.

So I text my mother.

It’s a brilliant plan. Mom’s a real quick way to bring my libido back down to earth.

Me: Hey, there. How are you holding up? How are the doggies getting along?
